Week Four (February 4-February 10)

Weekly Response

Perhaps the greatest contemporary issue on the grand scale, the issue of morals and ethics has been debated by the greatest minds throughout history, and will assuredly continue to be debated until mankind loses his grasp on existence. This struggle of pulling oneself up to a universal, or ideally universal, standard of coexisting alongside fellow humans is perhaps the most important point that separates us from the lower classes of animals, when the idea of consciousness is ignored. It is also, if some sources and voices are to be believed, the greatest obstacle in our way of achieving greater things. From the numerical standpoint, morality keeps us from the ultimatums of clinical detachment, clogging our world with the "weaker" or less valuable human beings; the sick, the elderly, the injured: it is also this separation from base creatures that makes us capable of truer emotion and faith. It is most definite that this emotional awareness is what makes us capable of hope, but also what creates our flawed drive for success in life. It is our vulnerability that makes us weak, but this weakness is also the source of our greatest strength; the compassion that allows us to develop stronger communal strengths than any other creature. Our weakness is why we thrive in cities that dwarf empirical populations. This division from baser beings allows us to be what we are; human. And only time could tell if that is to our aid or our detriment.
